Analyse one of your coursework productions in relation to genre.
Daniel Chandler says genre is a “distinctive type of text” and is used by audiences to divide the texts into categories based on common elements. I am going to discuss my music video project for Indie/ Alternative Rock band Maximo Park and their song Apply Some Pressure in relation to genre. To discuss my own work i will apply the ideas of Grant, Buckingham, Mittell, McQuail and Dyer in relation to my music video.
Barry Keith Grant identified genre in a way the audience can find it familiar to other texts and over time genre develops specific characteristics. Rock genre has very specific characteristic conventions which clearly identify to the audience what genre the song is. In the song Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs The Kaiser ChiefsBand performances have been shown in my music video which show the band playing instruments and there has been a particular attention to the main singer. Grant says that genre would be used to identify the band, although in my music video I had challenged this by merging positive aspects of a range of genres by showing a performance which could be considered as rock, although other aspects such as use of bright colour would be far from the conventional rock genre. In my music video i had used colours which challenge the typical assumptions of that genre, which relates to what David Buckingham says about changing genre.
Buckingham states that genre is not simply “given”,but is constant process of negotiation and change. In my work I adhered to this idea by merging rock and indie conventions. By using conventions of existing music videos and then combining these to create a new sub-genre i was able to create something fresh and unique that would be appealing to the audience. For example, during the band performance shots in the video, there were musical instruments which would be seen in any rock video, although developing this my making the performers dress up in smart clothing which would be by some indie bands, and the effect is very appealing this combination is not usually seen. Buckingham also states that genre is not given and made to be changed in order to create new

ReplyDeleteYour thrid paragraph about Buckingham was well structured and clearly uses the PDQ format however the sceond paragraph lacked specific examples from your video - give an examples of how you challenged the conventions. If you had completed the naswer obviously you would have gained more marks.
